Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital (ANTH) and Islamabad Medical & Dental College (IMDC), constituent
institutions of GAK HealthCare International, commemorated World Prematurity Day 2025 in
collaboration with UNICEF through a dedicated ceremony held at IMDC. The observance aimed to raise
awareness about the challenges associated with preterm births and to highlight the specialized care
required for premature infants.
The event commenced with a symbolic awareness walk led by faculty members and students, followed
by a formal session focused on recent advancements and best practices in neonatal health. The session
was hosted by Dr. Sumbal Saeed and began with Tilawat, after which Prof. Dr. Rubina Zulfqar, Head of
the Department of Pediatrics at IMDC/ANTH, delivered the welcome address. In her remarks, she
reaffirmed the institution’s unwavering commitment to excellence in pediatric and neonatal care.
Dr. Husnain Ali presented an overview of ANTH’s initiatives for premature infant care, with particular
emphasis on the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Unit, established in collaboration with UNICEF. He
highlighted the unit’s role in improving neonatal outcomes through evidence-based, family-centered
care and shared insights into the services being regularly provided to patients.
The program featured a keynote address by Dr. Samia Rizwan, Health Specialist, Maternal, Newborn and
Child Health, UNICEF Islamabad, who offered valuable perspectives on global standards and best
practices in the care of preterm infants. Dr. Areej Neyazi, Director, Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital,
also addressed the gathering, outlining the hospital’s strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening
neonatal healthcare infrastructure and improving survival rates through innovation, capacity building,
and partnerships. A vote of thanks was delivered by Col. (R) Prof. Dr. Sohail Aslam, acknowledging the
contributions of all speakers, organizers, and partners.
Following the formal proceedings, participants joined a cake-cutting ceremony and refreshments. The
program concluded with a guided tour of ANTH’s Kangaroo Mother Care Unit, where the hospital is
providing continuous and structured care to premature infants. The UNICEF delegation commended
ANTH’s sustained efforts in advancing neonatal care and appreciated the hospital’s commitment to
implementing globally recognized practices for the benefit of vulnerable newborns and their families.
