Understanding Blepharitis: A Common Eye Condition in Islamabad

July 11, 2025 by MARCOM Desk

Blepharitis is one of the most common eye conditions observed in Eye OPDs, especially in urban centers like Islamabad. Research shows that nearly one-third to half of the patients visiting ophthalmologists suffer from blepharitis. At Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital (ANTH), our experienced eye care specialists frequently diagnose and manage this chronic yet manageable eye condition with compassion and care.

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelid margin—the area where the eyelashes grow and where oil-producing meibomian glands open. These glands play a crucial role in preventing tear evaporation. Blepharitis can affect people of all ages, though it is more common in adults. With increasing screen time due to mobile phones, laptops, and other digital devices, symptoms of blepharitis are now being seen in younger populations as well. If you’re experiencing symptoms, consider visiting ANTH, a leading provider for blepharitis treatment in Islamabad.

Types of Blepharitis

There are four main types of blepharitis, classified based on whether they affect the eyelashes or the meibomian glands. A person can suffer from both types simultaneously.

  • Bacterial Blepharitis
Caused by bacteria living on the skin, this type commonly affects the lash area
  • Seborrheic Blepharitis
Usually seen in younger individuals, this type is associated with excess oil production and may be linked to poor eye hygiene, makeup use, or digital eye strain.
  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
More prevalent with aging, this condition affects oil secretion, reducing the quality of the tear film.
  • Meibomianitis
Inflammation of the meibomian glands, possibly triggered by hormonal changes, poor diet, acne treatments, or “quorum sensing,” a bacterial activity that increases virulence.

Symptoms of Blepharitis

Blepharitis shares many symptoms with dry eye syndrome:

  • Eye fatigue or “tired eyes”
  • Burning or gritty sensation
  • Excessive tearing (due to tear film instability)
  • Irritation upon opening eyes
  • Scaly or falling eyelashes
  • Sensitivity to cold air or air conditioning

Patients with meibomian gland issues may notice yellowish plugs at gland openings, indicating thicker, poor-quality oil secretions.

Why Do Eyes Water in Blepharitis?

The tear film has three layers: oily (meibomian glands), watery (lacrimal glands), and mucin (goblet cells in the conjunctiva). In blepharitis, poor oil quality causes quicker evaporation of tears. The body compensates by producing more watery tears, leading to excessive watering.

Blepharitis Diagnosis and Treatment at Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital, Islamabad

Proper diagnosis by a qualified eye specialist is essential. At Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital, our dedicated ophthalmologists use advanced diagnostic tools to identify the type of blepharitis and provide customized treatment plans.

Treatment Options Available at ANTH Eye Clinic:

  • Antibiotic Ointments: For bacterial infections (only on prescription).
  • Warm Compresses: To improve oil flow from glands.
  • Lid Massage & Gentle Cleaning: Using baby shampoo to maintain lash hygiene.
  • Artificial Tears: For relief from dry eyes, if advised by your doctor.

Daily Eye Hygiene Tips for Residents of Islamabad & Surrounding Areas

  • Apply warm compresses twice a day.
  • Massage eyelids gently to promote gland secretion.
  • Clean lashes regularly with diluted baby shampoo.
  • Reduce screen time and take 30-minute breaks.
  • Avoid cold air exposure, especially in winter or air-conditioned rooms.
  • Use humidifiers or place water near heaters during winters to maintain moisture levels.
